Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty
I’ve been reading Russel Brunson’s book Traffic Secrets. It’s all about driving traffic to
whatever you’re selling, in our case, books on Amazon.
Something he wrote slapped me across the face:
“Dig your well before you’re thirsty.”
The meaning is obvious. Start building an audience before your launch date.
Doesn’t matter what you’re selling, a new series, a new product.
Then when it’s launched, you have eager beavers ready to grab it.
If you wait until after launch, as so many of us do, you’ll have that lag time before momentum
builds and that can make the difference between a successful launch and one that just fizzles.
I’ve experienced that latter option more than once.
All of my new initiatives now have this mindset, to start digging to build up momentum before
launch.
What if you’re just starting out, and haven’t even published your first book yet?
You could start by creating an author page on FB and joining groups of readers who read your
genre. A lot of these groups have a “no self-promotion” policy, but you can still bring people to
your page and provide them with content.
You can do cover reveals, snippets from chapters, character bios, and backstories.
You can also start to build an ARC team.
How I wish I could go back in time and start to dig that well before I published my first book
instead of desperately clawing at the dry ground searching for that audience.
Maybe that’s why the concept of time travel is so appealing, righting the wrongs and mistakes
of the past. A truly universal desire.
